Kids geography has been one of my favourite subjects to explore in our homeschooling so far!
Our world is a beautiful and amazing place and there’s so much to learn about it. While it’s great to start learning about your own community, state/province and country first, the rest of the world is fascinating and well worth diving into.
In this post I’ll share some of my fav geography books for kids, but also share geography curriculum and some other ways to make geography learning fun (hello board games!).
When studying geography you can approach it in so many different ways and include as much as you wish to. You might find it’s easy to get on fun rabbit trails when learning about geography.
The definition of geography is
-
the study of the physical features of the earth and its atmosphere, and of human activity as it affects and is affected by these, including the distribution of populations and resources, land use, and industries.
This means you could focus your geography study on:
- Biomes around the world
- The different continents, countries and culture in each
- The cities and resources that humans depend on
- Global differences in ethnicity and human migration over the years
Kids geography can be beautiful and fascinating with the right books
The best kids geography books
When I first started homeschooling I came across two fun books called ‘The Wondrous Workings of Planet Earth‘ and ‘The Atlas Obscura Explorer’s Guide for the World’s Most Adventurous Kid’. I love the modern feel to these books. The Wondrous Workings of Planet Earth offers in-depth biology, ecology and geography mixed with beautiful artwork. Atlas Obscura shows you really interesting things about many countries and continents. From abandoned theme parks, deep under water caves and extreme weather, to animals, this book inspires global adventure.

This offers a deeper understanding of the earth, it’s rotation and the size of continents and oceans. I like this one as it lights up and offers the constellations too.

You could also deep dive into different countries by using a curriculum such as Beautiful Feet Books ‘Around the World with Picture Books’ which offers a couple options depending on what countries or continents you wish to learn about.
