Looking for Farm Books for Kids?
I love having our kids feel connected to their food sources and farming is about all of that. I feel grateful that there are some beautiful picture books that show the seasonal farm life. While we don’t farm we’ve been keeping chickens, gardening and homesteading for 17 years so I love adding it into our home learning. I love it so much that I created the Farm + Food unit study and many of these books are included.
There are many blog posts that have farm books for younger ages like toddlers, but today I wanted to share farm books for kids that are meant for a slightly older age. This is farming past the rhyming songs and basics of what each farm animals are.
These books offer an insight to farming whether animals, crops or the seasonal basics.
I also included some books that show homesteading as they’re related

The Farm that Feeds Us

This farm book for kids offers seasonal flow of an organic farm

A Year on the Farm by Penny Matthews also shows seasonal tasks, however this one is set in the southern hemisphere.
You will notice the opposite rhythm of our spring planting labeled as the season of Autumn. This is great to show kids because we import so much food from different hemispheres depending on the season.

Nora’s Chicks by Patricia MacLachlan is a more old fashioned book showing how farm animals can be wonderful friends when you’ve moved to a new home.

Sleep Tight Farm by Eugene Doyle is such a lovely tribute to hard working farmers at the end of the season.
It shows ‘putting the farm to sleep’ before winter comes a long.

What a cozy farm book for kids!
The Farmhouse by Sophie Blackall is another beautiful farm book focused on memories and beauty of every day living.

Ernestine’s Milky Way is a homesteading book showing the hard work of a brave 5-year-old girl.

And there are many other great farm books for kids!
This post is just some of my favourite Charlotte Mason inspired living books that offer beautiful illustrations. There are more specific books that focus on dairy, chickens, wool and other farm topics.
In my Farm + Food Unit Study I share even more books as well as fun activities to create a fun connection to our food.
