Best Homeschool Books for inspiration & Guidance
I couldn’t have made it this far with our homeschool if I hadn’t read books on how to homeschool.
Not only do books on how to homeschool help hold your hand when you’re beginning to homeschool, they offer support and guidance when you want to give up. Trust me! This happens often especially at the beginning. Wisdom from other moms is very useful.
The best homeschooling books will offer:
- Tips on homeschool life balance
- Inspiration when you want to give up
- Ideas for homeschool planning
- Rhythm with babies, toddlers, teens
- The importance of mom self-care
- Different homeschool philosophies and ways to teach
- Ways to make learning fun
- So much more!

I once shared my top homeschooling books on instagram and it’s still my most saved post.
Today I thought I would share a detailed list for you.
When I started homeschooling the first book I read was The Well-Trained Mind: A Guide to Classical Education at Home Susan Wise Bauer, Jessie Wise.
This book breaks down what kids should learn in each grade. It’s great for those that want a rigorous schedule and gives you a decent breakdown of how many hours students should spend on each subject. Tried as I might I felt like a failure because it felt too daunting to do that much in a day.
At the time I had a delayed reader and was pregnant with a toddler and it felt like way too much. I then stumbled upon Waldorf and Charlotte Mason influences which shifted our home learning.
I reference The Well-Trained Mind frequently and still use it as a base for what to learn in each grade (especially now with middle school).
One of the next books I fell in love with was Teaching from Rest.
Sarah Mackenzie ‘s book Teaching from Rest: A Homeschooler’s Guide to Unshakable Peace was exactly what I needed to find balance in that time of my life. I later read her book The Read-Aloud Family: Making Meaningful and Lasting Connections with Your Kids.
I find Sarah incredibly inspiring to make read alouds a priority in our homeschool and listen to her podcast the Read-Aloud-Revival frequently.
One of my next gems was The Brave Learner.
We’ve been fans of using the Brave writer lifestyle in our homeschool. I really enjoyed the The Brave Learner: Finding Everyday Magic in Homeschool, Learning, and Life by Julie Bogart and I’ve re-read her book many times. I’ve also started reading through her book Raising Critical Thinkers: A Parent’s Guide to Growing Wise Kids in the Digital Age.
